Comprei o primeiro exemplar deste livro enquanto estagiário. Tinha comprado um outro título na página da internet de uma pequena loja de antiguidades. Como ficava situada a apenas quinze minutos do meu local de estágio optei por levantá-lo em mão e dirigi-me à referida loja. Acabei por notar que existia um outro livro do meu interesse. O estado era paupérrimo! Sem capa amovível, sem capa, "restaurado" com etiquetas autocolantes e esferográfica e com uma enorme mancha de humidade na parte inferior... Estava terrível!
Trouxe-o, ainda numa fase imberbe enquanto colecionador.
Alguns anos volvidos acabei por encontrar um outro exemplar em muito melhores condições (diga-se de passagem, algo que não era difícil), digno de uma coleção.

Acerca da obra em si, o autor, jornalista de profissão, utiliza uma linguagem carregada de patriotismo enaltecendo o espírito dos marinheiros portugueses em vários episódios da Grande Guerra.
Um bom livro, fácil de ler e com um ponto de vista diferente da Guerra.

I bought my first copy while a trainee. I had bought another title at a small antique shop's internet page. The shop was located only fifteen minutes distant from my trainee placement so I went to pick it up personally. At the shop I've noticed the existence of another book that I could be interested at. The condition was extremely poor! With no dust cover nor cover it was "restored" with self-adhesive labels and ballpoint pen, and had an enormous moisture stain at the bottom... It was terrible!
I brought it home during my immature collector phase.
Several years later I ended up finding another copy in much better condition (something that wasn't difficult at all), worthy of a book collection.

About the book, the author, a journalist by profession, uses a patriotism loaded language exalting the spirit of the Portuguese sailors in several episodes of the Great War.
A nice book, easy to read and with a different point of view of the War.

Este foi um dos primeiros livros antigos que comprei. O "Memórias da Grande Guerra" de Jaime cortesão surgia em praticamente todas as obras recentes acerca da participação Portuguesa na Grande Guerra (livros, revistas, páginas da internet e artigos científicos). Como tal, era um alvo apetecível para satisfazer a minha curiosidade sobre o tema. Na verdade, o primeiro exemplar que adquiri era mais um livro velho do que um livro antigo: era uma reedição de 1969 (50 anos mais nova que o original) pertencente à coleção "Obras Completas de Jaime Cortesão". Além disso, o canto superior esquerdo havia sido roído por um cão e reparado com etiquetas autocolantes; excetuando este promenor estava em excelente estado. Era um livro de histórias com a sua própria história! Acabaria por oferecê-lo a um grande amigo também interessado no tema.

Muito mais tarde conseguiria adquirir um outro exemplar de 1969 intacto e, recentemente, o tão desejado volume de 1919. O interior não trazia nada de novo mas conseguia aproximar-me temporalmente do autor e para mim, isso é mais de metade do prazer.

This was one of the firsts antique books that I've bought. The Jaime Cortesão's "Memoirs from the Great War" appeared in almost all the recent works about the Portuguese participation in the Great War (books, magazines, web pages, research articles). For this reason it was an appealing target so I could satisfied my curiosity on the subject. In fact, the first copy I had purchase was more an old book rather then an antique book: it was a 1969 reedition (50 years younger than the original edition) from the "Complete Works of Jaime Cortesão". In addiction, it was been chewed on the top left corner by a dog and repaired with self-adhesive labels; excluding this detail the book was in mint condition. It was a book of stories with it's own story! I've end up to offer it to a close friend also interested by this subject.

Much later I finally acquired another 1969 edition, intact and, recently, the so much desired 1919 volume. There was nothing new about the work but it could get me closer to the author, and for me that is more than half the fun about it.
